The first day of preschool is exciting for both children and parents. Use these simple steps to set your child up for a smooth start and turn jitters into joy.
Establish a Consistent Routine
In the days before school starts, be sure to wake up, eat breakfast, and get dressed at roughly the same time each day.
Why it helps: Predictable routines build security. When children know what’s coming next, transitions (like first-day drop-off) feel less scary.
Visit the Classroom Together
You should be sure to schedule a visit to get familiar with our teachers, students, and program. You can even consider building extra comfort by driving or walking by the facility at other times to get extra exposure.
Why it helps: Familiar sights reduce “stranger danger.” Recognizing faces and spaces will make that first morning feel like visiting an old friend.
Practice Short Separations
Arrange a brief dropoff with a family friend or family member. Then, bring enthusiasm to the reunion to reinforce that separations end positively.
Why it helps: Your child learns that saying goodbye is temporary and that you always come back.
Talk It Through, Positively
Role-play with dolls or stuffed animals taking turns being the “new student.” Use upbeat language and highlight the positives.
Why it helps: Framing school as an adventure builds excitement, and children learn from your tone and mood.
