Making charoset is a simple Passover activity you can do with a preschooler. And with apples and a dash of sweetness, it’s an easy sell even for picky eaters.
Cut, squeeze, shake, stir. Even the youngest kitchen helpers can cut thin apples slices with a plastic knife, plus squeeze the honey, shake the cinnamon, and stir it all together. Older preschoolers can even try a kid-safe knife.
Make it your own. There’s no single “right” charoset. Ashkenazi families often use apples, walnuts, and wine. Sephardi versions might include dates, figs, or orange zest. Let your child taste and choose. It’s a small way to give them ownership.
A recipe to start with:
- 2 apples, peeled and diced
- ½ cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 to 2 tbsp honey
- A splash of grape juice
Let your preschooler mix everything in a big bowl. That’s it. Done!
